Relationships

Building healthier connections with others, while strengthening your relationship with yourself.

Relationships are an important part of our lives, but they aren't always easy to navigate. Whether it's with a romantic partner, family member, friend, or someone else important to you, relationships can bring challenges that leave you feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, frustrated, or unsure of yourself.

Maybe you're struggling to communicate your needs, finding yourself caught in the same patterns, or constantly putting others' feelings ahead of your own. Perhaps you're navigating conflict, a breakup, changing family dynamics, or questioning whether a relationship is meeting your emotional needs.

At Lauren Mallon Psychotherapy, we provide a supportive space to explore your relationships, better understand yourself, and work toward healthier, more fulfilling connections.

You may be here because:

  • You find yourself overthinking conversations, replaying disagreements, or worrying about what others think of you.

  • You struggle to communicate your needs or express how you're feeling without worrying about upsetting someone.

  • You often put other people's needs and feelings ahead of your own, even when it leaves you feeling exhausted or resentful.

  • You find it difficult to set boundaries or say no without experiencing guilt.

  • You feel disconnected from your partner or find yourselves having the same arguments without resolution.

  • You struggle with trust, jealousy, insecurity, or fears of rejection and abandonment.

  • You notice yourself repeating unhealthy relationship patterns but aren't sure how to change them.

  • You find yourself avoiding difficult conversations or conflict to keep the peace.

  • You are navigating complicated family dynamics, friendship challenges, or relationships that feel one-sided.

  • You are going through a breakup, separation, or significant change in a relationship and are struggling to adjust.

  • You feel responsible for other people's emotions, happiness, or reactions.

  • You want to build healthier, more fulfilling relationships but aren't sure where to start.

You can care deeply about your relationships while recognizing that your own needs, feelings, and well-being matter, too.

How therapy can help with relationships:

Our relationships can influence how we see ourselves, how we communicate, and how safe or comfortable we feel expressing our needs. Therapy can help you recognize patterns, understand where certain beliefs and behaviours developed, and explore ways to create healthier relationships without losing yourself in the process.

Together, we may work toward:

  • Understanding recurring relationship patterns and how they developed.

  • Building confidence in expressing your thoughts, feelings, and needs.

  • Developing healthier communication and conflict-resolution skills.

  • Establishing and maintaining boundaries without overwhelming guilt.

  • Exploring attachment patterns, trust, and emotional vulnerability.

  • Reducing people-pleasing behaviours and the need for external validation.

  • Strengthening self-worth and confidence within relationships.

  • Navigating breakups, family conflict, or changing relationship dynamics.

  • Learning to recognize and prioritize your own emotional needs.

The goal isn't to change who you are or tell you what decisions to make about your relationships. It's to help you develop greater awareness, confidence, and the skills to navigate relationships in ways that feel healthier and more aligned with your needs.

What therapy may look like

Our relationships are shaped by our experiences, beliefs, emotional needs, and the ways we've learned to connect with others. Therapy provides a supportive space to explore these patterns, better understand yourself, and develop healthier ways of navigating relationships. Depending on your experiences and goals, our approach may include:

Attachment-Based Therapy

Our early relationships can influence how we experience trust, emotional closeness, conflict, and vulnerability. Attachment-based approaches help you explore how these experiences may shape your current relationships, recognize patterns of insecurity or fear of abandonment, and develop healthier, more secure ways of connecting with others.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Sometimes we find ourselves repeating relationship patterns without fully understanding why. Psychodynamic therapy explores how past experiences, unconscious beliefs, and learned ways of relating to others may influence your current relationships. Through greater self-awareness, you can begin to understand these patterns and make more intentional choices in your relationships.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Our thoughts and beliefs can influence how we interpret situations and respond within relationships. CBT helps identify unhelpful thinking patterns, such as assuming the worst, fearing rejection, or feeling responsible for others' emotions. Together, we can work on developing more balanced perspectives and healthier ways of responding.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Relationships can bring uncomfortable emotions, particularly when setting boundaries, expressing needs, or navigating conflict. ACT helps you develop greater psychological flexibility, manage difficult thoughts and feelings, and make choices that align with your personal values rather than being guided by fear, guilt, or the need for approval.

Communication and Conflict Resolution

Healthy communication is an important part of building and maintaining meaningful relationships. Therapy can help you develop skills to express your thoughts, feelings, and needs more confidently, navigate difficult conversations, and manage disagreements in healthier ways. Together, we can explore communication patterns, practice active listening and assertiveness, and learn ways to approach conflict with greater understanding and less defensiveness or avoidance.
